Kayaking and canoeing are already great ways to explore the great outdoors, but it’s even cooler when you can see dozens of meters down, right through your canoe.

That’s the experience that operators at US KAYAK have on offer. Their tours take place down in Tottori Prefecture, which is known in part for its picturesque sand dunes and for being the birthplace of one of Japan’s most beloved manga artists. Located alongside the Sea of Japan, and the part of western Japan known as the San’in, this small prefecture is home to some impressive views.

Uradome Beach, near the Tottori town of Iwami, is home to a beautifully rocky coastline as well as incredibly clear water, rivaling that of some of Okinawa’s beaches. This is where visitors can paddle away in four-meter-long, clear polycarbonate canoes, from which they can see schools of horse mackerel, sea anenomes, squid, and other sea creatures. In some spots near Uradome Beach, visibility extends down as far as 25 meters. The area off Uradome Beach is part of the San’in Kaigan Geopark, and guests can tour the coastline or explore naturally formed caves in the Geopark.

US KAYAK has five of the specialized boats for rent, and each canoe seats two. Trips are ¥8,000 per person, and are available four times a day. This year, trips will be offered until October 15.
