Feb 12  Friday February 12th is the Shivaratri – one of the biggest festivals in India. According to Hindu mythology, Shivaratri or ‘Shiva’s Great Night’ symbolizes the wedding day of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Many however, believe Shivaratri is the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava Nritya – the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. Celebrated on the new moon, the Shivaratri Festival mainly take place at night where people visit temples across the country and spend the night  chanting mantras in praise of Lord Shiva. Last time I was in India I celebrated Shivaratri  in Kerala along with an intimate group of a million other people.  This year I am celebrating it with  my fellow yogi’s at the ashram where we will fast on fruit and chant for 24 hours continuously. I am fortunate to be in the ashram for this celebration.  Om Namah Shivaya!
