Tokyo’s leading U.K. event, London Calling turns four years old on June 18th, 2011!
Yes, another year has passed and London Calling continues to faithfully base itself upon London’s underground club scene which has consistently pioneered new sounds, urban movements and social scenes as well as adhering to the punk ethos of DIY that was so passionately expressed by the Clash.
Tokyo based DJ and promoter Mike Munoz says “We are extremely grateful that you have continued to ride with us throughout the past 4 years on a musical journey that continues to push the boundaries beyond commercial excesses, corporate sponsorships and the pressure of succumbing to the numbers game. It has been a tough road to hoe, but because of your support we have come further then most have expected and beyond our wildest dreams!”
“It is that very spirit that can be found at London Calling where the crowd, music, DJs and venue all combine to create something very special. That special thing is a place for good people to come together in the pursuit of good times. London Calling is a night that will let you set aside your worries, live for the moment and dance like you don’t have a choice.”
This year the party goes to Ageha, Tokyo’s largest club, “YES, we are celebrating our 4 Year Anniversary at Ageha! London Calling will take control of the pool and tent areas at Ageha’s all night Fuji Rock party! We are extremely honored and thrilled to collaborate with all night Fuji Rock and Third Culture on this special occasion. Please come join us on June 18th for Ageha’s London Calling’s Anniversary!”
“The Pool will feature Lovefingers from NYC, a.k.a. Andrew Hogge is one half of The Stallions and the main man behind ESP Institute, the hottest forward thinking label that has been pushing the Nu Disco scene throughout the world.”
“Back for a third time around is Chida (ene) who is no stranger to London Calling as well as residents abc disksystem and sound man supreme fleep… Finally, the return of Dirt Diggler will close out the pool with a set that is rumored to be so dirty that calls from major pornographic film studios have been inquiring for the rights to their underwear! Now, that’s dirty!
The Tent (Box) will feature UNTOLD from the U.K. Yes, the tent will be kept dark, dirty and heavy with the one of the world’s leading dubstep producers!” says Munoz.
“We are excited to announce UNTOLD’s first official appearance in Japan with the support of some of Tokyo’s hottest acts of dubstep, D’n B and Electro! Making his first appearance at London Calling is DJ Aki from the famous 06S parties held at WOMB.”
“Also, we have Mark Birtles from Tokyo Indie to slam home the hard driving beats of indie rock and electro. About Lovefingers:
Andrew Hogge, better known as Lovefingers, needs little introduction amongst the global disco elite. His internationally acclaimed mix of 999 songs at lovefingers.org has had a undeniable impact on the burgeoning eclectic dance scene of today.
A Los Angeles native, Andrew hosted Black disco Social Club since 2001 before heading off to New York City where he resides today. Andrew runs the Blackdisco imprint, a well known edits series which finds its releases in the bags of top jocks like DJ Harvey, James Murphy and Todd Terje. Apart from solo endeavors, Andrew is one half of the production/DJ duo The Stallions, alongside long-time disco cohort Lee Douglas of Rong Music and DFA.
This year Lovefingers also launched the label ESP Institute, turning the dance scene upside down with a roster of forward-thinking artists and unfamiliar sounds. The label has without-a-doubt hit the ground running, achieving almost instant cult status via its slew of massive releases including Lovefingers’ Concentration – Volume I.
About Untold:
Jack Dunning aka Untold is currently releasing some of the finest boundary pushing music around, simultaneously blasting dancefloors and attracting worldwide critical acclaim. Picked up in early 2008 by Hessle Audio, his Kingdom EP was the third release of the then fledgling imprint, introduced a sonic palate that was nuanced, understated but with bags of bass weight.
2009 unfolded with a slew of essential remixes for 2nd Drop and Planet Mu, alongside original material on Hotflush and Brainmath.
Jack’s largest body of work has been the 6 track EP on his own Hemlock label. The Gonna Work Out Fine Ep was a collection of tracks that pushed the genre boundaries by showcasing Jack’s wider musical palate by infusing classic house keys, ravey synths of laterday hardcore jungle as well as giving his twisted take on dark garage on this seminal EP.
2011 holds further promise. Having just remixed Ke$ha’s #1 Hit “Tik Tok”, a signed a collaboration with Roska to Numbers this past year and more releases on Hemlock of his own material is a given. Jack continues to show his A&R spurs with the likes of Mount Kimbie, James Blake, Cosmin TRG and Ramadanman gracing the label.
