Novelist and Buddhist nun Jakucho Setouchi, 89, joined a hunger strike along with writers Hisae Sawachi and Satoshi Kamata on Wednesday. The group stayed in front of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Tokyo to protest against the reactivation of reactors at the Oi nuclear power plant in Fukui Prefecture. The industry ministry in Tokyo oversees nuclear plant operations. The antinuclear civic group plans to continue its hunger strike until Saturday. Setouchi, with a “no to reactivation” band pinned to her nun’s habit, says that she can’t hand over Japan to the younger generations when the country is as bad a state as she’s seen in her almost 90 years of life. With the nuclear-crisis in Fukushima, Setouchi described the government’s moves to restart two idled reactors at Kansai Electric Power Co.’s Oi plant as “strange and scary”.
