Asia’s architectural treasures are now in danger of vanishing under rapid modernization. The Global Heritage Fund warned that the architectural treasures may soon crumble as they are threatened by economic expansion, influx of tourists, poor technical resources and conflicts. Among the 10 sites named by the Global Heritage Fund are the Ayutthaya in Thailand, Fort Santiago in the Philippines, and Preah Vihear in Cambodia. China is slowly losing its hundreds of walled cities and is urgently working to preserve them. Global preservation efforts led by UN’s cultural body, have yet to prioritize Asia. More than 80 percent of UNESCO World Heritage Sites are found in the richest countries. These architectural treasures are the only proof of Asia’s ancient and sophisticated cultures. Losing them means losing the rich history of Asian nations.
