Singaporeans expressed outraged after a Ferrari driven by a wealthy Chinese expatriate ran a red light and crashed into a taxi, killing a local cab driver, a Japanese woman and himself. Ma Chi, the 31-year old Ferrari driver, was a financial adviser applying for a permanent residency while already living in Singapore with his family.
Locals expressed an “anti-foreigner sentiment”, criticizing the government’s immigration policies. The population grew from 4.4 million in 2006 to 5.2 million in 2011, as millions of foreign workers and professionals crowded the city-state.
Locals have also blamed foreigners for the high living costs, strained public transport and limited jobs. The government’s more open immigration policy was looked down upon in the May 2011 elections, resulting in a 60% vote for the People’s Action Party.
