Gigi Chao, whose father’s bounty launched a thousand marriage proposals, wants the offer revoked, AFP reports.
Hong Kong tycoon Cecil Chao offered a hefty prize of HK$500 million (US$65 million) for any man who can win his lesbian daughter’s heart. “I dont mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted,” the 76-year old tycoon said. Since then, hundreds of bachelors from around the globe bombarded his office with letters, e-mails and faxes expressing their interests of knowing his daughter, with some even claiming they don’t want the money.
Even though she called her father’s behaviour “seriously distracting”, Gigi defended the tycoon, saying “I wasn’t angry at all. I was really quite touched, very touched and very… how should I say? Moved by Daddy’s announcement”.
“It’s really his way of saying, baby girl, I love you. You deserve more,” she added. Still, Gigi seems unfazed by all the attention and seems even tired of it. “I am secretly praying for a blackout… so that I can get some peace and quiet,” she told the South China Morning Post.
Gigi reportedly married her same-sex partner of seven years in France earlier this year. Her father denies that his daughter, which he describes as “a very good woman with both talent and looks”, is gay.
