North Korea’s largest newspaper hit out at the US presidential elections with its usual sharp tone against Western policy, underlining tensions between the rogue state and the superpower.
Rodong Shinmun, the mouthpiece of the ruling Workers’ Party, accused the candidates of using North Korea for electoral gain in a commentary printed Sunday, despite the fact that North Korea was barely mentioned in campaigns, Wall Street Journal reports.
“It appears that the US seeks to step up the moves of isolating and stifling the DPRK and wait for the ‘change’ in the DPRK,” the newspaper said. “But it is a foolish dream”.
“For decades, the US has unsuccessfully resorted to the moves against the DPRK. Instead, the DPRK has been catapulted to the center stage of the world.”
Another commentary run on Monday accused the US of interfering with South Korea’s upcoming presidential elections in December. “The South Koreans should enhance vigilance against the moves of the US to interfere in the ‘election’ aimed at extending the pro-US conservative regime, and resolutely check and frustrate them,” the newspaper warned.
North Korea decried US’ “hostile” policy toward Pyongyang during the UN General Assembly last month, claiming it would ignite a nuclear war in the Korean peninsula as border tensions run high.
