Thai authorities on Thursday arrested a German fugitive who had been on the run in Bangkok for two weeks since escaping from his allegedly sleeping guards’ watch.
An immigration police official said Carlo Konstantin Kohl was arrested near the German embassy in Bangkok after fleeing his Australian guards during a stopover at Suvarnabhumi airport in the capital, reports AFP.
The 25-year-old German national was being extradited to Germany via Thailand for theft and drug trafficking in Australia. He is also wanted for skipping parole in his native Germany.
A Thai court handed Kohl a two-year suspended jail term for illegal entry and a 6,000 baht ($200) fine. He is expected to be handed over to German authorities next week, the immigration police said.
Australian immigration authorities have denied Thai media reports that the two guards, from a private firm that runs Australia’s immigration security, were asleep when Kohl escaped, according to AFP.
