Not quite what it seems, but what better reason to go and have a look inside Shibuya’s new-ish Hikarie building (especially now that the crowds have died down) than an exhibition of David Lynch paintings?
The filmmaker, visual artist, musician and occasional actor has another string to his eccentric, occasionally surreal bow. In fact, Lynch trained as a painter before directing Twin Peaks and gaining fame for his film work so to an extent this is a return to his creative roots. There will be paintings, drawings and photographs of sculpture work selected from a recent career retrospective.
Many of the images are a deep, fascinating window on Lynch’s mind – all within one one of Tokyo’s hottest new shopping and entertainment venues, Hikarie, in Shibuya, which, after opening in May, has already hosted a popular Damien Hirst show. Don your gas masks, weave through the cosmetics floors and head on up to the 8th floor Tomio Koyama Gallery.
