Celebrating 70 Years of Godzilla

Godzilla, the world’s most famous kaiju, is celebrating its 70th anniversary. Godzilla has starred in numerous films and media since its first appearance, each iteration expressing the style and technology of each artist and era. Godzilla the Art Exhibition at Mori Arts Center Gallery showcases 29 artists and their interpretation of the giant monster. Featured artists include Tadanori Yokoo, Kazama Sachiko, Kikuji Kawada, Akira Takayama, Tomoko Sato, Tadanobu Asano and more.

The exhibit displays a wide collection of works in various genres and mediums, including paintings, sculptures, photography and performances. There will also be a diorama exclusive to the venue, by Toho Visual Arts.

Producer Takeshi Yoroi explains, “[Godzilla] has always been a symbol of disaster… something indefinable and intangible takes shape as Godzilla and begins to move.”

A special ¥6700 ticket set includes a limited edition Godzilla the Art Movie Monster Series Godzilla (1954) Model figure. The figure is a recreation of the prototype used in the first Godzilla film in 1954. The standard ticket costs ¥2500 (¥2200 on weekdays) for general public and university students. From May 7 to May 30, after 17:00 on weekdays, a ¥500 discount will be applied to the weekday ticket price.

The exhibit will have exclusive merchandise available. The centerpiece is the Godzilla The Art Exhibition Commemorative Toho 30cm Series Favorite Sculptors Line Godzilla (2016) figure that runs for ¥49500.
