Celebrate Hangyodon’s 40th Birthday

Hangyodon, Sanrio’s popular fish-like character, is turning 40 this year. The character was designed by artist Hisato Inoue, who also designed Badtz-Maru. To celebrate 40 years of Hangyodon, a pop-up cafe themed around hanami (cherry blossom viewing) is opening across Japan for a limited time with various Chinese-inspired dishes, treats, drinks and exclusive merchandise.

The anniversary cafe will be touring in the following cities and dates:

  • Tokyo: March 6 – April 20 at Box Cafe & Space Q Plaza Harajuku
  • Nagoya: March 6 – April 20 at Box Cafe & Space Global Gate
  • Hokkaido: March 12 – April 13 at Cafe Interlude Coach & Four Shinkawadori
  • Osaka: March 13 to April 20 at Box Cafe & Space Tennoji Mio

The menu includes a variety of cutely decorated dishes. Chinese-inspired entrées include Hangyodon’s happy dim sum and the sakura chilled noodles. Though Hangyodon is celebrating his birthday, you can also order your own berry-topped celebration cake. The sakura blossom latte and peach spring tea soda come with one of six random straw toppers featuring Hangyodon and his friends.

The cafe’s gift shop also has new exclusive merchandise, including mystery keychains, acrylic stands, pouches and mugs.

Customers who make an advance reservation will receive one of four random fans featuring Hangyodon that can be used as photo props. Customers who order menu items over ¥3300 will receive a special sakura-scented postcard.
