Step Into the World of Hokusai’s Edo
Hokusai’s masterpiece ukiyo-e come to life in a way never experienced before. “Hokusai: Another Story in Tokyo” inside Shibuya’s Tokyu Plaza is an immersive experience that presents the beauty of Katsushika Hokusai’s Edo-era print work with modern technology for a beautiful interactive exhibit of juxtaposition.
Hokusai created over 30,000 pieces of art throughout his life. Through his artwork we can explore not only his mastery and versatility of woodblock prints, but also get a glimpse of the Edo culture through his eyes. The exhibit guides guests through four rooms, each focusing on a different characteristic of the acclaimed artist.
The Light Room features an installation inspired by Hokusai’s “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” series. Candle-like light sculptures use patented DTIP 3D texture image processing technology to create ultra-high resolution images.
The Landscape Room uses a floor-based haptic system that allows guests to directly step into Hokusai’s art. The breathtaking natural landscapes depicted in his prints surround visitors with the changing seasons displayed on Sony Crystal LED screens.
The Wind Room honors Hokusai’s ability to capture an invisible element– wind. This room uses airflow control technology to blow wind accompanied with an aerial journey through Hokusai’s landscapes.
The Hokusai Room combines high-definition visuals, spatial audio and tactile sensory technology such as vibration to deliver a 4D experience.
The exhibit concludes with a special epilogue area with master replicas created using DTIP technology. Each individual fiber of the original washi paper texture has been digitally preserved, giving guests the rare opportunity to see Hokusai’s art up close and with extraordinary detail.
