An Intimate Documentary Exploring the Personal Experiences of Three Survivors of the Bombing of Tokyo
The single most destructive bombing raid in history began at 12:08 a.m. on March 10, 1945, and lasted close to three hours. Over 250 American B-29s dropped 1,665 tons of incendiary bombs on Tokyo, killing around 100,000 civilians, though estimates vary. Now, in a society rapidly forgetting, three elderly survivors fight to leave behind a public record of their experiences before they pass away. Paper City explores what we choose to remember and aim to forget — and what the consequences of those choices are.
Paper City is the feature-length debut of Tokyo-based Australian filmmaker Adrian Francis. For the 80th anniversary of the attack, the film is being rereleased at Eigakan Stranger for two weeks only with English subtitles.
