After Sri Lanka, Thailand, Laos, Nepal, India, Jamaica and Brazil, it’s now Vietnam’s turn to shine in the festival spotlight at Yoyogi Park.

The series of festivals held from spring through to the last weeks of summer every year attempt to introduce local food, culture, and music from different countries around the world.

For the fifth time around, Vietnam is back and has become one of the most popular events, attracting a record-breaking 150,000 visitors last year. The annual theme, dubbed “Meet Vietnam” will please Vietnamese culture aficionados: expect numerous food booths serving all the staples, such as pho (a noodle soup), fried spring rolls, banh mi (baguette sandwiches) and banh xeo (savory pancakes), and an assortment of lesser-known delicacies usually not available in Japan.

Although we all love Vietnamese fare (and beer!), the festival also presents other aspects of the culture, displaying and selling ao dai (a traditional dress for women), colorful plastic baskets and many other fun and interesting items.

This year’s headlining musical guests include popular singer Dan Truong, and young V-pop (who knew?) sensation Phuong Vy. A handful of local artists connected to Vietnam are also performing, curiously along with Japanese Queen tribute band “Gueen”. Come nosh on some banh mi, while celebrating the gorgeous country’s history and culture.
