One of the best ways to discover any area in Tokyo is to take a lazy afternoon stroll along its side streets. Ebisu is not in short on a supply of these and is vibrant, with foreigner-friendly businesses, restaurants, and shops.

On recommendation from a friend, i sought out the super-hip bookstore and gallery, Nadiff. Not exactly easy to find, it lies on a side street right between and also parallel to Meji Dori and the Meguro River. Once inside, I immediatelly lost myself in the large selection of English and French art, design, and fashion books. Prices are reasonable and you can really find some gems – check out the avant-garde DVD stock!

Fancying an early dinner I strolled back out onto Meiji Dori and down towards Hirro. In about three minutes, I came to Cardenas restaurant. I am a sucker for “fusion cuisine” and I must say Cardenas’ mix of pan-asian fair with a foreign twist was a winner, particularly for ¥4,300, including an all you can drink menu!

To finish off my Ebisu excursion, I headed back towards the station and stopped off at The Foot Nik British pub. With live football on large screens, an extensive draft beer menu, and a great atmosphere, I ended up missing the last train due to a superb Newcastle vs. West Ham game… I do love Saturdays!
