The Japan Immigration Bureau has begun issuing new ID cards with “Taiwanese” as a nationality, reports the Japan Times.
Taiwanese living in Japan now have “Taiwanese” as their nationality instead of “Chinese” as part of revised immigration laws. Under the new immigration laws, residence cards will replace alien registration cards. The new residence cards will include nationality, in addition to the card holder’s name, date of birth and other information.
The Japanese government recognizes Taiwanese passports as valid documents. However, the new immigration laws will not affect Japan’s diplomatic stance on Taiwan, which is considered as part of China under its “one China policy”. The United Nations does not recognize Taiwan as a country.
