Richard Pover-Foulkes enjoys a great golfing getaway
Like most foreigners I was under the impression that playing golf in Japan is excessively expensive and inaccessible without an interpreter. After nearly four years in Japan I had not hit a single golf ball and was looking forward to playing a weekend of golf at Windsor Park Country Club. Windsor Park provides comfortable accommodation together with a gourmet restaurant, fully stocked bar and, of course, a high quality Par 72, 7,000-yard golf course.
Just two hours’ drive from Tokyo, it is easy to make a relaxing weekend of your time at Windsor Park. We opted to play the front nine holes at a leisurely pace on Saturday afternoon, which were played in good time and I could even hit a few more balls in the range, where you can spend hours at no extra charge. Having had a delicious lunch prior to playing, it was back to the restaurant where the wonderful menu can be washed down with delicious wine from the vineyard owned by golf legend, Greg Norman.
After a comfortable rest in the club accommodation we looked forward to playing the full 18 holes from the front white tees. On the course the previous day I chose to carry my clubs, but wanting an easier life I opted for an electric cart. On a course that offers a good challenge from the first hole, my rusty game saw a few wild tee shots heading out of bounds but by keeping the ball reasonably straight I found the fairways to be quite generous. On the green the ball runs true giving you confidence on both shorter and longer putts. Heading into the ninth and eighteenth green you are faced with a large water hazard making exciting viewing for those sitting in the clubhouse. Overall the course was in great condition and enjoyable for any level of golfer.
After a great weekend I joined the membership at Windsor Park and have returned a number of times to enjoy not just the golf but also the hospitality that club provides so well.
